Anne Marie Ng (also known as N.G.) is a London-based menswear designer who draws on the rich cultural heritages of Europe, Britain, China and elsewhere – distilling them to their absolute essence – to create clothing for the man who is as at home in Hong Kong or Shanghai as in London, Paris, or New York.
One of the few designers to have worked under four separate British royal warrants, and the first female designer and head of design for Gieves & Hawkes (founded in 1771), luxury menswear designer Anne Marie has left her mark on Europe, China, Britain and the USA.
Having graduated from the internationally acclaimed Central St. Martin’s in 1996, Anne Marie co-founded men’s fashion label AKA, which retailed worldwide in high-end stores such as Colette, Browns, Harvey Nichols, Selfridges, Barneys NY, Barneys Japan, and Fred Segal, LA.
In 2005, Anne Marie was invited to join Savile Row-based brand, Kilgour as Head of Casualwear. Within a short time, the luxury casualwear line was winning accolades, along with clients such as actors Daniel Craig (James Bond) and Jude Law. The success of the casualwear line prompted Kilgour to debut the collection in a critically-acclaimed Paris catwalk show for SS09, featuring clothing, footwear and accessories by Anne Marie.
Five years later, Anne Marie joined Gieves & Hawkes as Chief designer for the company’s Hong Kong-based China license. With more than two centuries of luxury menswear behind it, Gieves & Hawkes – whose London flagship store is still located at No. 1 Savile Row – was expanding in the China region. There she put together and managed a design team, overseeing the design direction of super luxury formalwear and casualwear collections for over 120 stores throughout China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. This experience taught her the complicated cultural language and rules of the growing Chinese market. Anne Marie is one of only a select few European designers to understand what fabrics, colours, cuts and non-Chinese influences work, which don’t, and what can be adapted for China’s regions.
Upon the acquisition of Gieves & Hawkes by Lifung Trinity, Anne Marie returned to London as Global Head of Design. In this capacity she assembled a new London team, working with luxury mills, tailoring workshops, bespoke cutters and embroiderers in Great Britain. Her aim was to enhance on Gieves & Hawkes’ reputation as a luxury label “made in England,” by returning as much of the creation and production back to the UK. She also drew on the brand’s more than two centuries of military and naval uniforms archive, designing the Spring/Summer 2013 and Autumn/Winter 2013 collections and conceptualizing the Spring/Summer 2014.
Anne Marie is now embarking on her new menswear label, WEARFORE and freelance design projects. She believes a man’s wardrobe should be thoughtful and his sense of style personal. Whether relaxing, playing or at a business or formal occasion, he should be well dressed. As a designer, Anne Marie creates for the man that is self-assured, not showy; the man that combines a spirit of daring with respect for tradition – the entrepreneur, the adventurer and traveller, at home wherever he is, and at peace no matter what life throws at him.
